Robin Crozier, 1936-21/12/2001, Robin was a Lecturer at Sunderland Polytechnic and a prolific Mail Artist since the early 1970s.
After Robin's death, some of his collection went to the Tate Gallery (the Robin Crozier Mail Art Archive) and some was sold by Marcus Campbell Art Books, I bought several items from this collection, for very modest prices, at one of the Artists Bookfairs at the ICA and should have bought lots more. Items from this source are marked CROZIER.
Robin was invited to give a talk at the Tate Gallery in 1994, as part of Flux Britannica, as it was during the week he had applied to take time off work. Just as he was about to start his 'Fluxus Lecture', another lecturer from Sunderland Polytechnic interrupted and announced that he'd been incredulous at hearing of Robin's invitation to appear at the Tate and taken it upon himself to take the train down to London and check that it was actually true. Having satisfied himself of this, he then walked out of the room.
(Ben Vautier and Stewart Home also gave lectures/performances as part of Flux Britannica)
Interview with Robin by Ruud Janssen from 1994/5
Here's a short review of the 2002 'Correspondences' display at Tate Modern:-
Robin Crozier
70 x completed Memo(Random) - Memo(ry) A4 sheets dating from 1984-1997. (have I got any more elsewhere?)
1 x uncompleted Memo(Random) - Memo(ry) A4 sheet to me, dated 12/11/97.. ( find the envelope we sent back and forth for several years.)
Memo(Random) - Memo(ry) was a long-term project of Robin Crozier's, which began in February 1983, with each piece of post he sent out he would enclose an A4 sheet (handwritten and/or photocopied)
which on the top front read, with your name and the date added:-

and on the reverse at the bottom of the page:-

each time you sent one back, he'd return one completed by another artist/correspondent and another blank one, this exchange could continue for years.

not actually in this box at the moment - but it belongs here...not actually in this box at the moment - but it belongs here...
portrait of Robin Crozier Ceolfrith 25 Sunderland, UK, January 1975 EXPLAIN THE CONCEPT
Robin sent me a copy of this and then a short while afterwards I bought 10 copies from him, fairly cheaply, £3 each, he wasn't very interested in making profit from them. They were in beautiful mint condition, but the glue had deteriorated over the years, when opening the book you had to hold the spine tightly to prevent all the pages coming loose!
One of these copies was included in the 'Live in Your Head: Concept and Experiment in Britain 1965-1975' Exhibition at the Whitechapel Gallery, London, 2000.( I should get a copy of the catalogue for this show.)
Here's my Mailorder Catalogue description from 1997:- 'Early mailart project with contributions from many International Postal Art Superstars and Fluxus gangmembers, 19x19cm 68pgs £8.00 +50p/p'.
Currently on sale for $27-$70 (June 2013) here

The Agent , Number 2, London, Nov 1979, A5, 36pgs, edited and produced by Georgette Munday and Jim Hol (James Holloway) published by 'New Agency', previously called the 'New Dada Agency'. Addressed and stamped directly on the back cover, the magazine had been closed with a small sticker on each of the 3 open edges.
'This issue works out at 31p a copy, (including postage); if you send what you think itÕs worth youÕll help pay for the next one (February 1980); or send something else in exchange.' Currently on sale by Steven Lieber $20 (June 2013) here
HAND-SOME DEVILS, Claes Tellvid, Gothenburg, Sweden, 36pgs, A4 landscape, 1981, 120 copies, numbered. ( series - Intima Banaliteter 3 )
Mailart Project with 28 contributors. ( include text from the invitation - which explains it perfectly!) CROZIER
The First Post Post Mail Art Correspondeence New DaDa Rubberstamp International mail art Network Activity show. A4, 26pgs, 1988, SUNY at Buffalo, USA.
Produced by Robyn Rebecca Bates and Greg Puchalski. The full title, originally made with individually rubberstamped letters, is spread through the whole catalogue, across the top of each page. Exhibition catalogue, although dated 1988, it's a historical collection of 1970s Mail Art, some addressed to Puchalski, so it could be from his personal collection or a collection held by the University. Works included are a selection of interesting pieces, rather than taking the more completist 'one thing from every participant' approach.
The list of artists included is definitely of people active in the 1970s and not of those active in 1988! CROZIER

( see GPO v G.P-O, Ecart, Switz, 1976) CROZIER
Lee's Alphabet, By Lon Spiegelman, 1977, 8.5 x 5.5 inches, 24 pgs, offset,
A hand drawn, surreal alphabet and some characters by Lon for his son Lee, who was born this year. Lon makes the idea of this booklet being a gift to his new son even more explicit by taking the imaginative step of assigning copright to Lee.
This copy signed, numbered and inscribed to Robin Crozier. CROZIER
The drawings are reminscent of the Topps 1967 Nutty Initials bubblegum sticker series, wdely assumed to be by Basil Wolverton, but actually drawn by Norman Saunders.
(There are examples of these stickers, from the more recent Pee Wee's Playhouse and MAD CAPS sticker series, in another box...)
(These were preceded by Topp's 1965 Ugly Stickers - some of which were sketched by Wolverton, with finished artwork done by Saunders)

The first catalogue sheets were just for my own use, but with this one, produced during UNBOXING, I'm aware of a wider audience so am adding more explanation and comments and being careful with dates and fact checking.
Distinguish between :-
Slide Binding
Spiral Binding
Comb Binding
(Thermal Binding)
(Velo Binding)
For some older items, I'm finding it hard to tell how they've been printed:-
duplicator,
early photocopier,
offset/metal plates,
offset/paper plates = 'Instant Print'.
(Have a look at 'Printing It' and 'The Alternative Printing Handbook' for more info.)
When going through the boxes, I've been separating items, placing sheets of card inbetween and putting some things in polythene bags.
This is to protect them - particularly from rusty staples and also to stop them getting crushed and squashed.
It also means that after cataloguing and reboxing, this collection will take up even more space!

NOTES
Unless marked otherwise all items were acquired/purchased at or shortly after the original date of publication. (unless I can't remember!)
LATER - indicates that an item was acquired/purchased at a later date, additional information about where it came from or if bought for a 'collector's price' may also be included.

(sometimes I purchased a copy for myself, and then afterwards decided to get more copies to sell.)
CONTRIBUTOR - my work is featured in some way, either as an :-
ACTIVE contributor to the publication/project.
or as a PASSIVE contributor when it's just been included by the creator/publisher without specifically requesting it!
(this could be - DIRECT a Publication/person that I had been in touch with, or INDIRECT Publication/person that I'd never been directly in touch with.)
ASSEMBLING/PAGE where I sent a specified number of printed pages (or similar items, such as stickers) to be assembled/included.
LISTING listing - where my name and/or address is listed but no work shown.
